LOD (Level of Detail), Measurement Accuracy Levels

LOD, or Level of Detail (or in some contexts Level of Development), is a scale used in construction and industrial modeling to describe the accuracy and information richness of a 3D model. Different LOD levels define how detailed a model is.

  • LOD 100 (Conceptual) includes only basic shapes and volume, without exact dimensions or detail—used in early design stages.
  • LOD 200 (Generalized) includes rough geometry and relative dimensions; components are recognizable but not fully defined in size or placement. Often used in preliminary planning and clash detection.
  • LOD 300 (Accurate) includes precise geometry, dimensions, and locations. All elements are modeled for production, installation, and maintenance. Suitable for detailed engineering and construction design.

LOD levels are especially important in BIM (Building Information Modeling) projects and in industrial 3D scanning and measurement workflows.
