As built documentation

As built documentation refers to the final and authoritative record of a construction, infrastructure, or industrial project as it was actually completed. Unlike design documents, which reflect the intended plans, as built documentation includes all modifications, deviations, or on-site adjustments that took place during implementation.

These documents typically contain updated drawings, specifications, and models that mirror the physical state of the completed asset. They can take the form of redlined blueprints, 3D models (such as BIM files), point cloud data, or digital twins, depending on the nature and scale of the project.

Accurate as built documentation is essential for:

  • Maintenance and repairs: Providing technicians with reliable and current reference material.
  • Renovation or expansion: Supporting informed planning and minimising risk in future works.
  • Regulatory compliance: Demonstrating adherence to safety and quality standards.
  • Handover and lifecycle management: Facilitating knowledge transfer and asset management.

In large-scale or regulated environments, as built documentation is often produced or validated by independent third parties to ensure objectivity and long-term usability.
