ReCap Design Software
ReCap (Reality Capture) is a professional-grade design and reality capture software developed by Autodesk. It enables users to convert real-world physical environments into accurate, three-dimensional digital models using laser scanning or photogrammetry techniques. ReCap processes raw data into dense point clouds, which can then be used for design, inspection, measurement, and documentation tasks.
ReCap supports data captured from terrestrial laser scanners, drones, and structured-light systems. It imports and processes high-volume datasets (e.g. LAS, E57 formats), providing tools for:
- Noise reduction and scan cleaning
- Point cloud registration and alignment
- Region segmentation and annotation
- Measurement and geolocation referencing
- Integration with BIM and CAD environments
Its ability to convert physical spaces into precise digital assets makes it ideal for use in Scan-to-BIM, construction planning, clash detection, and structural analysis workflows. ReCap’s outputs are natively compatible with other Autodesk platforms, such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, InfraWorks and Revit, facilitating seamless handoffs across disciplines.
ReCap is widely used in:
- Inspection and asset maintenance: creating reference models for long-term lifecycle use
- Architecture and construction: creating as-built documentation and planning renovations
- Civil and infrastructure engineering: mapping bridges, roads and terrain
- Industrial facility design: retrofitting or modifying production lines
- Cultural heritage: documenting historical and archaeological sites in 3D
