Point Cloud Formats

Point cloud formats are file types used to store 3D point cloud data, representing the geometry of scanned objects or environments. Formats may include additional metadata such as color, intensity, and acquisition parameters.

Common formats include:

  • E57: A vendor-neutral format that supports various data types and includes coordinate, image, and metadata.
  • LAS/LAZ: Originally developed for aerial mapping; LAZ is a compressed version of LAS.
  • PTS/PTX: Text-based formats used for exchanging point data across software.
  • POD: Bentley Systems’ optimized format for large-scale point clouds.
  • RCP/RCS: Autodesk ReCap formats for managing and integrating point clouds in Autodesk applications.

Choosing the right format depends on the software, hardware, and project requirements.
